ALTERNATIVES for MENTAL ILLNESS or REBALANCING
Learn via my journey with a loved one of alternatives for Bipolar (etc) with amino acids, vegetarian DHA, herbs, veggie dietary improvements, bad digestion, Leaky gut syndrome, natural Lithium, Oils, Detox, uncovering Ergot, Parasites, heavy Metals role in M.I, nutritional deficiencies, Orthomolecular medicine, Reiki misunderstandings, denial isn't denial - its Anosognosia, more.
I started this web site to help others avoid total fear & helplessness from a diagnosis of mental illness, as well to educate Reiki & Alternative healers with some little understood facts.
My general interest has been in the health field of healing herbs since the 1970's. Over time this lead me to uncover rare info on what was previously deemed to be incurable or hopeless - including Mental Illness (which I may sometimes abbreviate as: M.I.).
Everyone is different plus I'm still learning. However, was pleasantly surprised to discover that for many, there are potential solutions.
Now, I am NOT a doctor, and what works for one individual may or may not work for another. (See Disclaimer below.) What I wish to offer is from a layman's perspective.

EXPERIENCES
Having my loving family member diagnosed with a Mental Illness was devastating! It took time to research and locate all the info presented on this site. Therefore, I would turn to Distant Healing as well. When I'd send in a Healing request, the constant replies I'd receive went something like this:
"I will send healing but of course you must know
the recipient has to be open to it or it won't work."
Another said:
"Oh, the dis-eases we bring upon ourselves!"
And yet another:
"I will send energy for their 'emotions' to heal, and only then might the Mental Illness be relieved or go away."
BRIEF INFO ON ENERGY HEALING or REIKI
One of the first bits of new information healers (etc) need to understand is..... none of the above are that true! Sure, some elements may be present; but they are secondary.
To treat stress only or mostly, is akin to treating the symptom and not the root cause for this illness.
Which is something those in alternative healing circles have a hard time with; understandably since it took the allopathic decades to accept or see the connection between emotions and illness = leaving us (those inclined toward alternative health) frustrated. However, we have similarly gone the extreme as they did with their method. Thus, I'd like to try to clarify the confusion.
There are various forms of energy healing. I practice one that does not teach your healing is dependant upon the openness of the recipient. I realize this is currently considered a far fetched idea, and while I am not here to debate therefore don't want to get too into this, I do wish to give some evidence.
Scientific testing of patients who were sleeping, people under anesthesia, even animals, have shown noticeable and significant healing. Some of these tests were performed to prove energy healing is not the "placebo" effect. And they did. It also offered evidence that a person can heal regardless of their mental state, open or not open. Considering many who are mentally ill believe they are fine and don't need healing, this is an important point! And important to all of us who love them and want to do something that "can" make a change. Especially when their loved one has arrived at a point of refusal to all other help, medication (natural or unnatural) ~ then Distant Healing becomes very important. It is my belief, backed up by science, that it "does" work. In time I will add detailed scientific evidence, but until then let us recognize ki / prana's independent potency, usefulness, and need for the entire family.
Next Reiki, particularly Reiki II but all Reiki, plus some other types of Energy Healing....... teach there are powerful emotional issues going on in all disease. This is often referred to as dis-ease. I don't doubt this sometimes happens; what concerns me is when it's presented as an absolute truth, or predominant.
We use to complain the allopathic doctors taught all illness was on the physical level, not psychological. Over time that was proven incorrect. Yet what has been done? A complete turn around where alternative healers claim approximately 98% of all illness is strongly psychological or emotional. This is just as fanatical as the belief of allopathic medical practitioners. Please bear with me while I try to better clarify important factors of Mental Illness.
First, no one brings mental illness upon themselves. Sure, there may be stressful elements, but stress seldom causes Mental Illness. After all, why can two people go through the exact same stressor and one does not become Mentally Ill while the other does? Something "more" must be going on physically.
What comes to mind is a comparison of sugar. It can cause one afflicted with Mental Illness/Imbalance to act out strangely, to get hyper or worse. But sugar does not give someone mental illness. Stress or sugar (Etc) can indeed exacerbate it, but are not the root of the problem. These things are not as important as the physical actions going on within the body desperately screaming to be addressed. And has been ignored energetically as well, due to these very philosophies presented as absolutes or predominates.
Now, I once ran into a well intended though mislead healer who tried to include both points of view, yet still placed the majority of etiology onto emotions. This saddened me. Especially because I have respect for this individual & spouse. Simultaneously most of their energy healing has focused on emotions as the cause of everything. This is what they read, think, and breathe. Consider this: If they are running prana / ki into a Mentally Ill person, reiki is nevertheless being transferred to them, thus the positive outcome they speak of may really be the result of increased chi, "despite" their personal belief. To sum up their belielf, they claim Mental Illness is a chemical imbalance of the brain but it first began as some type of severe stressor. (sigh)
Please allow me to clarify, I am NOT suggesting that can't happen ever, no. What I am pointing toward is it's presentation as the "all-in-all," which in turn ignores the "countless" others who have Mental Illness due to hereditary (though this is further touched on here at this site), or from internal though invisible (to us) breakage / disconnect in the brain or spine; or a physical blockage of dopamine etc not getting where it needs to go, or a damaged nerve, so on & so forth. This list can go on.
Though they said they agree a person in a car accident who received a head injury has a physical cause which brought on this illness. What they do not understand is there can be just as real of a disconnect, even brain shrinkage, that doesn't require a physical accident nor emotional stressors; something that does not show on the outside, and can result from various causes.
This web site it grants some common sense of potential etiologies discovered & explained. Similarly there must be a number of alternative etiologies which are not receiving recognition, which are not all limited to negative emotions as the cause.
Nevertheless, it's hard to let go of something we are attached to, or even have worked with and saw that it "sometimes" brought success. But how often does that 'sometimes' occur? One out of every 100 clients? One out of every thousand? And how many do they actually see to treat? Do they visit Mental Health clinics to gather data as evidence of what they believe, or are their results limited to those who can afford to visit their New Age clinic? Referring here of course, to Mental Illness only. Anyhow, those who did not receive success with it are therefore left out under such a belief system.
In order to appreciate Mental Illness is not a choice, does not originate from discomfort (dis-ease), & basically, not any of these concepts predominate, we may need to examine a little biology. Because it's a physical disconnect that takes place within the brain thats invisible to us as it is beneath the cranium.
For example, if my arm gets broken, I need to go to an M.D. to have it realigned and put into a cast. Maybe later a psychologist or therapist could be added, but most will accept this isn't always required, as a broken arm is not automatically some major psychological or emotional issue. Accidents DO happen, as can other maladies.
Similarly, we need to find ways to help the brain to reconnect and rebalance itself first and foremost because like a broken arm, it too has a physical break or disconnection. Mental Illness is an imbalance of brain "chemistry." The brain is an organ, therefore we are not talking about emotions here. Anyway....it's a complex science but this may also be why some brush it off as "emotional." That needs to be corrected.
In essence: There are chemicals or neurotransmitters in everyone's brain that 'carry' the messages "between" the nerves (synapses). When there's too much or little of any such "chemical" it becomes very difficult for the person to accurately process information. This (physical disconnect) can result in some very strange behavior.
To take this biology a bit further: Cells accept messages from other cells at what is called the dendritic branch. This binds to the dentritic spine.
Now, that dendric spine brings on a ripple of excitation. This will next physically trek beside the body of the cell.
IF it contains sufficient energy to get over the "Axon Hillock;" next it will travel down it, becoming simplified by the myelin sheath.
[Are ya staying with me so far? If its just emotions, why is it so biologically complex? :)- Ahhh yes, it is physical after all. ....Don't worry, soon we'll talk about solutions for that. They do exist.]
Ok, next cells develop glial cells, which create the myelin sheath by using it.
Those cells which aren't so much used - they result in seldom recognized signals. Therefore it will emit a signal to other cells via axon terminals by broadcasting more neurotransmitters.
When a neurotransmitter isn't noticed or received by the brain cells closest to them, the blood stream will finally pick them up. And when the blood stream picks them up, they next become hormones.
Consider brain cells are faster in their action, with hormones lagging behind.
Now folks can see a connection to hormonal imbalances too, though I don't want to get off topic, as this section is about the way the brain physically functions.
Add to the mix, vast pollution of our air,
drinking water, oceans (fish are dying), oil spills, factory dumpings, global
warming, large
scale (factory) burning of plastics / chemicals/ Etc, paint & toxins we may
keep in our garage etc, holes in the ozone (did they really fix it?),
along with various causes -- thus more people are getting sick in our
modern times more than our grandparents,
due to that which they have
no control over. That 98%
belief on emotions is no longer applicable. The Times (& pollution!)
They Are A Changin'. :-)
So healers out there, please try to understand Mental Illness isn't the result of dis-ease. And please take note that there's a difference between Emotional Illness and Mental Illness; that they are not one and the same. When you send healing to the M.I., kindly send it predominately to the brain, requesting synapses, neurons, etc., to "mend." (Directing healing into the spine is helpful too.) Not to worry, because healing the physical brain will relieve stress.
Next, there IS a rainbow at the end of that cloud!
And so we start. :-) With hope, with new information, with possibilities one may not have heard of......
While it's stated that no one knows the exact cause of Mental illness, in the holistic world there are a variety of reputed causes, including lengthy digestive problems (leaky gut syndrome) which in turns leaks out nutrients thus keeping them from getting up to the brain and growing neurons, dealing with synapses, etc. -- to a variety of other nutrient related issues that need to be taken care of first to create balance.
Some might find this too simple an explanation, but imagine cutting off nutrition to your brain for an extended period of time: a year and a half, 5 years, 10? Is it so hard now to understand this could result in brain damage?
"But I feed my loved one very well." one may say. Yes, you do! The problem commonly has been difficulty with nutrients crossing the brain of the mentally ill - they often can't. The good news is, when that is the case, there is help!
This can be better explained at http://www.truehope.com They have scientific tests on their site to prove their success rate. A similar product is http://www.equilib.us I bought one of these for a while, and have no financial etc. connection with either, do not benefit from any sales. I simply wish to help.
They're not cheap, I won't pretend otherwise. But when they work, it's worth it! How do you know if they will work? This was the question I had, and gave it a lot of thought. It even started to annoy me because I could not figure out the answer for certain.
Finally I came to the conclusion that I really will never "know" cent per cent if it's what's needed or not needed. Health is too important, so after reading scientific backing
( http://www.truehope.com/_research/research1.asp
and http://www.ect.org/selfhelp/bipolcomm.html for starters),
coupled with testimonials ( http://truehope.com/_success_stories/success.asp, etc.,) -- I decided to take the plunge and give it a shot.
What were our result? The short answer is, there was noticeable improvement. Even the doctor (who couldn't stand natural treatment) made a comment on the unusual progress, saying he had never seen that happen before!
Since our loved one does not live with us, we had no power to make sure there would be continuance of the product. And since one symptom of Bipolar (etc) is often an inability to "see" the sickness exists, so the product was stopped. Which brings me to the next topic: "Anasognosia."

ANOSOGNOSIA
The "denial" &/or "emotional" component many view as predominantly involved with Mental Illness, usually is not. What psychiatrists have called denial, and later alternative healers for different reasons also tagged as denial, has more often than not turned out to be the medical condition: Anosognosia. This is a brain disconnection, not emotional denial nor stubbornness:
*Anosognosia, "unawareness of illness," is a syndrome commonly seen in people with serious mental illness and some neurological disorders.
*A growing body of evidence points to the fact that for many people with serious mental illness, lack of insight is a medically based condition.
*About half of the people with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder may not be getting the treatment they need because of a brain deficit that renders them unable to perceive their illness.
* "People will come up with illogical and even bizarre explanations for symptoms and life circumstances stemming from their illness."
* People with this syndrome do not believe they are ill despite evidence to the contrary, said Amador, who is director of psychology at the New York Psychiatric Institute and professor of psychology.

ETIOLOGY
The cause of Mental Illness is virtually unknown by medical doctors. Admittedly, it is a tough one. Yet people have discovered various causes. And when the toxin is removed OR nutrient put back, etc., Etc. ETC., there have been vast turn-around's with their loved one! Do something different (& scientifically backed), coupled with patience, and find out for yourself!
Some fear, hopelessly, "It's in my genes. Nothing I can do about it. I'm stuck with this disease for life." That was what we use to believe about genetics, not even so long ago. However, new research is showing that is not automatically the case. More recent research in the area has revealed that when we change the circumstances, gene's are able to change the way they respond! So you are not stuck with your genes, just need to change their environment, be it diet, detoxing (colonic?), other things on this site (and not yet on this site). There is so much a person can do these days!
Parasites is another potential culprit. At the moment I don't have time to type up the details, but for example, in the Hulda Zapper book, it states that the parasite "strongyloides" have been discovered by every person with Depression, going on to say for Bipolar "This variety of depression is associated with Strongyloides, as the main parasite in the brain. Plus chlorine as an allergen". Strongyloides are a roundworm which lives within the soil and can survive there for several generations! Also pointing out: "These tiny wormlets can pass into the placenta into the unborn fetus (!). Is it any wonder that these brain disturbances seem to be inherited? Of course, there is ample opportunity to simply eat them off hands, other people's hands, and off floors during childhood."
For Schizophrenia, Ergot (Claviceps purpurea) is a parasitic fungus, seems to be a big culprit. The book states "Ergot is always seen in sick persons. Other mycotoxins are also present, including sterigmatocystin, cytochalasin B, and aflatoxin. As the mycotoxin panorama changes, brain symptoms can change from compulsive hand washing to paranoia or from hearing voices to meanness in disposition. ... A bacterium, Mycobacterium pheli, may also be a cause because I have seen high correlations between it and schizophrenia cases." pg 261 (See below under "HERBS" for parasitic cleanses & oral chelation.) ....From a web site: "There are notes that tell us about villages, whose inhabitants turned into bloodthirsty werewolves. At a closer look though these phenomenon's originated inside people's heads as one of the substances in ergots is closely related to LSD." http://home.swipnet.se/~w-47128/healing.html#Ergot
UPDATE: Hookworms have also been noted as present in the brain of Schizophrenia.
While the following are from
topics indicating the relationship between Ergot to Alcholism; and Ergot to Alzheimers - it also gives some suggestions for
help!
"Ergot is a mould that is present in alcoholic beverages. Protect your liver from all food moulds, especially ergot. To destroy food moulds, add
vitamin C powder to nuts, pasta, cereals and grains. To help the brain recover, take
glutamine 500 mg (NOTE: do
not take Glutamine with Mania or other similar disorders!), a B-50 complex, and
niacinamide (500 mg)
with each meal. Avoid fossil fuel pollution of your home by switching to
all electric utilities. Remove all hurricane lamps or antique lamps even when unused."
AND
"Avoid food molds: ergot especially has strong mental effects."
.
Please note, I do not claim these always work for everyone; for that matter I make no claims anywhere on this web page. Simply that during a Psych Evaluation these perspectives are seldom, if ever, examined. Wouldn't it make sense to first rule out the various possibilities? (Not intended to be answered, simply food for thought. ) I also may not automatically agree with "everything" on the following site, but there was enough which makes one feel a need to consider parasitic infestation as a bona fide possibility. I put much of it above, but for those curious, both of the above are take from: http://www.consumerhealth.org/articles/display.cfm?ID=19990303133500 Always see a reputable Health Care Practitioner before starting any program.
Next, while I can't type it all, here is another important point from the parasite book: "Don't go off lithium and other medications until your doctors agrees you are ready, about a half year. After this, make sure you still keep it handy. Although you may be free of manic depression in a day, reinfecting yourself weeks later will attack your brain like a hurricane; it has not yet healed, the routes are open. Be patient; healing will happen ...." pg 259
Now, Mental Illness can also be caused by Hormonal imbalances. Birthing a child is one way this can happen. Long story short, when nutrients are replaced, many have claimed this healed. (Vit. B6 is a big one here, but others are also required. Best to get a balanced "formula.") While I can't vouch for every person, as each experience and success is individual, but the improvement we saw when our loved one was cooperating and taking an orthomolecular product (mentioned above) was very convincing to us.
The key word here is "Orthomolecular." I had been interested in health foods and natural vitamins/minerals, etc. for decades, but they never worked much for our family member. Whereas taking an orthomolecular product did! Now one time someone tried to sell me their product, insisting it was orthomolecular. When I did even the smallest bit of research, I realized it wasn't. How? It must say this on the label, otherwise it's not. Even from the perspective that it would be a strong selling point, companies would make sure to include it in the labeling. Additionally, there are many testimonials to be found with orthomolecular products. When I asked this person to show me testimonials, and a good number of them, they could not. So regardless of how good anyone makes their product sound, if they can't back it up with proof and can't legally write it on the bottle.... well I wouldn't buy it! Now, I don't have the time to convince you of the difference between even the best health food vitamin/mineral etc supplements and orthomolecular. Simply read the testimonials and decide for yourself.
Moving on.... other causes of mental illness have been noted as various Allergies; something I read about in a wonderful Rodale book years ago, though it's title fails me at the moment. (If I ever find out, I'll come back here and edit.) Anyway, I have seen this backed up by various web sites on the same topic. Do a net search and you will be surprised, for example, how badly mold/mildew (basements) etc can bring on an attack. Or Chemicals, such as bleach, ammonia, cleansers, etc., when inhaled or exposed over an extended period of time, can bring on a mental imbalance.
Though not the book (yet), here is a helpful link: http://www.alternativementalhealth.com/articles/brainallergies.htm
There are other reasons/causes, all of which I can't fit in. Simply, we have to start 'somewhere.'
Excerpt:
Published in the "Psychiatric Times" - on
the topic of BIPOLAR
"In
the published preliminary study, the subjects-all outpatients- were men and
women ages 18 to 65 who met DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder types I and II.
Forty percent of the study cohort had rapid-cycling symptoms. To enter the
study, patients had to have experienced at least one manic or hypomanic episode
within the past year. However, they also had to be free of notable medical or
psychiatric comorbidity. Patients who were on other medications at the beginning
of the study were allowed to continue on them. Subjects received seven capsules
bid for a total daily omega-3 fatty acid dosage of 6.2 g of eicosapentanoic acid
(EPA) and 3.4 g of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Patients randomized to placebo
also received seven capsules bid.
The
primary outcome measure related to the emergence or continuation of mood
symptoms. Patients ended their participation in the study and treatment was
considered to have failed if the mood symptoms emerged or continued beyond 30
days in patients who were not euthymic at baseline. Secondary outcome measures
were the results of the Young Mania Rating Scale, Hamilton Rating Scale for
Depression, Clinical Global Impression Scale and Global Assessment Scale
ratings, taken before and after treatment.
Overall,
nine of the fourteen patients who received omega-3
fatty acids had symptom-relief, while only 3 out of 16 patients who
received the placebo showed relief, according to Stoll (McLean Hospital,
1999).

FLAX SEED OIL is high in Omega 3 /EPA!
According to studies, it requires a dose of 9 - 12 G's daily. Some folks mention concern on its effect on the liver since it is not water soluble. Yet allopathic meds have a much more damaging effect on liver. Taking Milk Thistle herb has been scientifically tested to protect the liver. So has the Chinese herb, Schizandra berries. In any case, the choice is yours. If you go this route, remember to get organic.

Vegetarian DHA
EPA
appears to be the more "active" ingredient for mood within
the omega-3. So don't want to buy stuff that has tons of DHA with
little EPA. But
some need more DHA for mental balance. For
those, it has only been available in fish form for quite a while. I found an excellent web
site that offers it in veggie form, plus explains how this is actually better
for one's health than toxic mercury/fish. Again, I have no financial, etc., connection or benefit with these
folks either. http://www.vegetarianvitamin.com/catalog_132.html

PYRROLE
DISORDER
.
Know your loved ones actual problem! Utilize tests and find out the facts. For example: Omega 3s can worsen mental symptoms in bipolar or schizophrenic patients "IF" they have a pyrrole disorder. This phenotype is dramatically short of arachidonic acid & giving omega 3 oils aggravates the situation since omega 3 and omega 6 EFA's are in competition for delta 5,6 desaturases. We use red blood cell membrane analysis for EFA's if we suspect this problem. More at: http://www.alternativementalhealth.com/articles/walshMP.htm

LITHIUM is a mineral. And you can buy it online. Note the difference between the types of lithium: allopathic and the natural "orotate." So do your homework and educate yourself first. With that said, here are a few sites where you can locate natural lithium. Don't be limited to these; feel free to research elsewhere as needed.
www.findserenitynow.com -- Lithium Orotate - Now this has been reputed to be expensive. A reader may like this site because offers some interesting information.
Lithium Orotate - More affordable. http://www.1to1vitamins.com/products/lithium_orotate.html
Side

type of Lithium, I do not know for certain. Besides, good to know just in case. http://www.drugs.com/lithium.html
It also lists some drug interactions.

WARNING,
BLOOD TESTS & DOCTORS
Before
starting any program, before taking any product, do NOT speculate on what
vitamin / mineral or lithium ETC you ‘think’ is in need. One
man’s food is another man’s poison. For example, scientific testing revealed some with mental illness have a deficiency in zinc. The fact that
it has science behind it may convince you this is sufficient. However, there are
some people who have the same mental illness but with plenty of zinc in their
body -- and too much zinc can be toxic! Please,
PLEASE don’t do anything on your own but instead take out the time to look for
a cooperative licensed psychiatrist who is willing to work "with"
you in this natural field. And get a blood test. (Including if selecting to use Lithium.)
Locate a practitioner in your area:
http://alternativementalhealth.com/directory/full_search.asp
One thing that has bothered me over the years is when I have tried to help someone, and when it didn’t turn out perfectly, or not at all -- I got the backlash and blamed. How can anyone help others in a world of that consciousness? Therefore I leave it all up to each individual (as I always have). It’s yours to investigate. Be responsible. Work with a professional.

SCHIZOPHRENIA
I haven't said much about Schizophrenia. While our loved one is Bipolar, thus more research within that area, I don't want to leave this out. For now I humbly request those in need of this specific info do a net search for a wonderful doctor who has had fascinating success with schizophrenic patients. His name is Abram Hoffer, MD
Here is one of his shorter articles: http://www.doctoryourself.com/review_hoffer_B3.html
Just found another, not exactly by him but a connection to Dr. Hoffer. This site has his phone number. http://www.merrily.com/well.htm

DIETARY
All of the above is likely to work better if certain dietary guidelines are observed. I don't have time to put all of them here, nor do I know every single one, but the basics, I know. .......[Have recently updated a bit.]
Additionally, your loved one may not want to do all of the following. Do not let that discourage you! Even if they don't do some things, but they do others, it is all worth its while! Phew, aren't we lucky for that. :-)
Avoid sugar, including sodas & most juices. Some so-called natural products contain a lot of sugar, fructose, sucrose, etc. It sneaks in. Become a label reader: locate and eliminate. If it can't be totally cut out, reduce gradually and then keep it to a minimum. Sugar can't cause mental illness, but it sure can bring on an attack! (Eat fruits instead of candy, etc.) A good alternative is STEVIA. This can be used in baking, mixing into cereals if a person must have it sweet, and basically anything sugar is used. Only be aware that some brands leave a slightly bitter after taste. I've found one that does not. It's "NuStevia." Try an internet search. (Again, I have no connection with any companies mentioned on this web page.) Stevia is 200-300 times sweeter! Only need tiny amount. Get a chart. (Back to that good 'old internet search. lol Don't worry, they're not hard to find.) This stuff is great, has a reputation that it's even good for Diabetics!
Avoid white bread and similar white products, like white noodles, white rice, etc. Eat brown, whole grains. (The more "complex" carbohydrates.)
Avoid all meat products. But DO eat high vegetarian protein products. It's a common practice to use drugs for treating diseased animals, as well as use of drugs to promote quicker 'livestock' growth. Even when the 'proper' drug amount is used, it's never really gone. There is, what's called, Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) which most countries set. MRL is about the amount of: Heavy metal residue, hormone residue, residue of pesticides, natural toxins ...allowed in meat (or eggs) yet can still be sold. We need to understand, while they may fit within legal acceptance, this doesn't mean they are free from these various toxins. Especially when one's health is delicate and needs removal of, for example, heavy metals from their body, a person is simply putting them right back in when eating "acceptable" amounts or MRL. Plus, various chemicals, such as mycotoxins, industrial chemicals, and trace metals have unknowingly found their way into the animals tissue. There are no safe level for these.
It's important that protein is not only pure but easily digestible. That is best found in veggie foods. Preferably organic. It may take a little time to adjust to beans, but many contain tyrosine, an amino acid which is calming to the mind. Especially lentils. Mung is an overall balancer. So if ya need to include some type of DIGESTIVE ENZYME to kick this diet into gear, that's ok too; and many recommend this. It'll probably be temporary anyway, as the body starts to rebalance. (See list below.)
DO Eat THREE regular meals daily and timely, PLUS healthy vegetarian protein snacks in between AND a (veggie protein) snack before bedtime. Seriously!
Avoid aspartame and any artificial sweetener. They can be triggers. Regarding aspartame - it's been shown to alter brain chemistry in sensitive individuals & with some even brought on an epileptic seizure. Again, check out "Stevia." It's a natural, herbal, sweetener. See details above. Note: While there have not been any studies on Stevia and the Mentally Ill (that I know of anyway), studies performed in other health areas revealed very good results.
Avoid Alcohol & Cigarettes. Alcohol damages brain cells, amongst other complications. Similarly, avoid ALL DRUGS & Cigarettes. Smoking can reduce the effectiveness of a person's medication, be it allopathic or natural, by up to 50%!
Avoid Chemicals, pesticides, & heavy metals like: cadmium, aluminum, mercury (which can be transmitted from mother to child), lead & copper (commonly seen in schizophrenia / psychotic sufferers), plus they're neurotoxins. Those silver dental amalgams contain mercury so could be a neurotoxic in some persons who are sensitive. Other chemicals, such as solvents, household cleaning items (look for natural replacements - Seventh Generation products come to mind), should be avoided. And weed killer, etc.. These things have been reputed to bring on an attack, at the least. .....Regarding weed killer, most herbs are weeds, so before ya try to get rid of it, look it up in a book and find out if it has some health benefits it can offer you! First make sure though, it has not been exposed to poisons.
Avoid food additives & refined foods (from bleached white flour to Soda to Popsicles), as well as Caffeine. These can make one hyper, effect the nervous system and brain.
Avoid SOY. What?! Avoid soy? Isn't that one of the best health foods, best sources of protein, GABA, and other related benefits? This was hard for me to accept as well, but soy just "aint" all it's cracked up to be. Soy tends to interfere with production of the hormones which help a person cope with stress. And though it is high in protein, it is a type of protein that is hard on the digestion. Need more? Check out: http://www.soyonlineservice.co.nz/ for "The Truth About Soy."
And try to figure out if there are any, often unsuspected, food allergies.
Remember, your loved one may not follow all of the above as strictly as you wish they would, & probably won't. Don't give up. Never approach healing this disease with an "all or none" method. If you do, you'll be setting yourself up for failure. Take what you can get. :-) Just do your best and utilize a variety of other things. One helper - both Equilib and True Hope, offer their product in a buffered powdered form that can be mixed in with certain foods. They give recipes. This can not be heated or cooked.
Similarly, Flax oil can be added to certain foods. There are flax recipes online. It too can not be heated or cooked. That's ok, and not a problem, just needed information.
TRYPTOPHAN and TYROSINE
Two amino acids for good mental health. The short story is... tryptophan has a calming effect, tyrosine energizes and helps one to be alert.
When it comes to dietary, don't worry about what is the perfect one to eat, simply do your best. It's when a person starts to take them in pill form that you better know what you are doing. Especially than, figure out which is needed, because you don't want a Manic person to increase their energy, for example. Yet to lift the spirits of one who feels down and out, that same tyrosine is often what's needed.
Though people often may need to eat some of both. Often mixing the foods are a good idea. On days of sadness, eat more tyrosine. And days of hyper or mania, eat more tryptophan. (Along with other help of course.) But mostly, just eat 'em. :-) Keep it simple.
While the supplement 'tyrosine' is no longer available, a new improved product is; called 5 HTP. However, we are talking about food here, so:
TRYPTOPHAN FOODS SOURCES:
Evening primrose Oil (contains high amounts)
Almonds
Brown Rice
Cabbage
Dairy products (low fat when possible, plus: try unsweetened Yogurt)
Peanuts (Make sure there are no peanut allergies! AND too many may result in a stomach ache.)
Sesame seeds
Kidney beans
Lima beans
Oats
Pistachios
Poppy seed
Pumpkin seeds
Spinach
Wheat (IF there's no gluten allergy! An important thing to get tested for!)
TYROSINE FOODS SOURCES:
In some researched cases of depression which were not especially amenable to treatment with tryptophan or formula's including it, whereas tyrosine has been found helpful and useful because it readily passes through the brain-blood barrier, reacting positively with branched chain amino acids - BCAA's . It's thought to be concentrated primarily in the intracellular protein - "brain tubulin" - important to formation, structure and integrity of neurons and neural pathways: important message sending "devices" of the brain. With that said.....while food sources alone usually aren't enough, to add them to the diet can be helpful and supportive:
Almonds
Garbanzo, raw
Carrots, cooked
Oats & cooked oatmeal
Potato, baked
Rice, brown, cooked
Bananas (high glycemic, eat sparingly.)
Dairy
products (low fat when possible, plus: try unsweetened Yogurt)
Dried peas
Lima beans
Kidney beans
(Beans!)
Pumpkin seeds
Sesame seeds
Wheat (Again, IF there's no gluten allergy - important to tested for!)
Tyrosine works better in the presence of ascorbic acid (vitamin C), so eat an orange, etc., with your meal.
NOTE: Tyrosine is also needed for thyroid hormone. Sometimes low thyroid or HYPOTHYROID has been misdiagnosed as depression. Good idea to get thyroid checked out.
Vitamin B12 - Even allopathic doctors now, hhave given recognition to this. Some with Mental Illness are significantly depleted in Vitamin B12. Basically, a lack of Vitamin B12 has been found to cause a type of brain damage which resembles schizophrenia. When ingesting B12 it's often recommended to take calcium at the same meal because while calcium usually blocks absorption of other vits/herbs (just for an hour or two), in this case it is required to assists with absorption of B12. There must also be hydrochloric acid present for proper break down of food and vitamins. Although vitamin B12 is available in several forms it's usually best to get the sublingual type. Place the sublingual B12 under the tongue as you would homeopathic's, and it will go directly into the blood system via the vein under the tongue. (Usually a full B complex formula is also needed to help.)
ELECTROLYTES - Briefly.... It's been discovvered that some with Mental Illness have an electrolyte imbalance. I do not like those drinks which claim to be healthy & contain electrolytes "but" are filled with high sucrose and high sodium / salt content!! There are other sources and other ways to get more electrolytes into the body.
HERBAL HELP ![]()
I feel a need to stress that so far, no herb has been scientifically found to resolve Mental Illness - Bipolar Affective, Schizophrenia, Psychosis - meaning it won't replace medication. If that's understood, then folks can often gain noticeable help with the addition of herbs. And always buy organic.
ST. JOHN'S WORT ~ Reputed good for
depression. Elevates mood. Several controlled studies offered positive results treating patients who had
mild to moderate depression.
Parts Used: Roots, leaves, and flowers. Used as a tea, extract, oil and in tablet
form.
It's action is based on the ability of
its active
ingredient hypericin to
inhibit breakdown of neurotransmitters in the brain. The herb also inhibits
monoamine oxidase (MAO) & works as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI);
both actions are similar to drugs prescribed for depression. In Germany nearly half of depression, anxiety, & sleep disorders are treated with
hypericin.
This herb should not be taken with any other antidepressants, it is not effective for severe depression, & no one should stop taking any prescribed medications for depression without proper medical supervision & care.
St John's Wort also has been used to help repair nerve damage, reduce pain, inflammation, relieve menstrual cramping, arthritis, sciatica. Has a favorable action on secretion of bile, thereby soothing the digestive system.
Active constituents within this herb --over 50-- include hypericin & pseudohypericin,
flavonoids, tannins & procyanidins. Tannins bring on an astringent effect for wound healing, hypericin increases capillary blood
flow & is a MAO inhibitor.
Many studies document the clinical effects of hypericum as an
antidepressant treatment similar to several synthetic antidepressants,
and with a minimum of side effects. Hypericin has been demonstrated to increase theta
brain waves. Theta waves occur during sleep & have also been associated with
deep meditation, serene pleasure & heightened
creative activity. It may effectually, gradually, improve perception and
clarify the thinking processes.
It's also has antiviral
properties that can counter herpes
simplex, flu viruses and is being investigated as a treatment for Acquired
IimmunoDeficiency Syndrome
(AIDS).
Recent studies indicate it's not beneficial in treating
major depression of moderate severity. More research is needed.
Some Side Effects: Sensitivity to Sunlight - can be a bit of a problem for folks
who hike, suntan or must spend time outdoors. Anyone who is hypersensitive to
sunlight or is taking other photosensitizing drugs should be
cautious! ....And fatigue. ....Also, potential (minor) Weight Loss - For some this is desired. :-) Many comment they took St. John's Wort because of depression, then discovered it also
helped them lose some weight. There are even brands of heath food "Diet pills" that actually contain St. John's Wort.
If you are pregnant or lactating or taking SSRI-based anti-depressants like Prozac, Paxil, Serazone, Zoloft, Etc check with your doctor before taking St. John's Wort. It's known to interfere with a number of prescription medications, including anticoagulants, antidepressants, anti-seizure medications, drugs to treat HIV, or prevent transplant rejection. St. John's Wort interacts with certain drugs, and these interactions can be dangerous. Check with a drug interaction link and ask your health care practitioner.
The above statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Foods to avoid with this herb - There has been much debate on this topic, as it was believed that St. John's Wort exhibits MAOI traits. If
true then people must avoid foods such as red wine & alcohol in general, aged cheeses,
sausage, etc. Researchers and doctors currently believe St. John's Wort does not exhibit such properties. Maybe eat some cheese (dairy contains
small amounts of lithium but cheese is constipating, so only have a little),
then avoid the rest. Remember, consult your medical practitioner, & get blood pressure checked before
a few weeks after
start taking St. John's Wort.
Also,
do NOT take St. John's Wort with amino acid supplements (especially
Phenylalanine and Tyrosine - Can only use one:
Amino Acids OR St. Johns Wort.) Also especially, avoid if you have high blood pressure. This herb speeds the body's breakdown of several
drugs including the blood thinner Coumadin (warfarin), the heart drug digoxin, oral contraceptives, cyclospor, theophylline, and
fenprocoumon. (Do your research.)
One review of 23 randomized trials including nearly 2,000 patients with mild or moderate depressive disorders, 15 placebo-controlled, and 8 compared the herb with a drug treatment: Extracts of St. John’s Wort were nearly 3 times more effective than placebo, and were comparable to prescription anti-depressants & with fewer side effects.
Recommended dosage
- 900mg per day (300mg taken 3 times per daay) of a 5:1 extract of the flowering tops and leaves standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin in a complex of other natural compounds, or 3-5% hyperforin (the main constituent which is thought to inhibit neurotransmitter re-uptake). Minimal treatment time is
4-6 weeks so be patient. It needs
time to build up in your body before sufficiently works. In Germany, this
herb is marketed as a drug for the treatment of mild depression and anxiety. Check
with your doc.

DANDELION ~ While this root may not be known for mental illness as a nervine or antidepressant etc - what it IS known for is it's high vitamin/mineral content. Contains high amounts of potassium (an electrolyte).
Considering much cutting edge research is starting to reveal much Mental illness has roots in deficiency, this herb offers benefit in that area, plus easily digestible.
It does have some calming effects too, considering it contains calcium. Also good for the liver - a concern where mental health in general and/or taking of medication is present. Helps liver with fat digestion too. It's a diuretic, but a unique one. Most diuretics cause one to eliminate potassium in the urine. Since this dandelion contains potassium, there is no loss, but gain!
....Mildly laxative, root is antiviral, lowers blood sugar in Diabetics.
Leaves include active principles: bitter glycosides; lutein, violaxanthin and other carotenoids; terpenoids; choline; potassium salts; iron & other trace minerals; plus vitamins A, B, C, and D.
Roots contain: bitter principle taraxacin, triterpines including taraxol and taraxasterol, sterols, inulin (not insulin), natural sugars, pectin (good for digestion), choline, glycosides, phenolic acid, asparagine, volatile oils and vitamins.
Flowers contain: helenin and vitamins A and B-2 / riboflavin.
Can be ground roasted and used as a coffee substitute. Wise to get off coffee for those with or without mental illness! :-) ---The deep roots of dandelion absorb more trace minerals than the shallow-rooted vegetables which are more often used in Western diets. ---Often used as a food in countries outsidde USA, however, you can pick organic fresh leaves and add them to a salad. Make sure they have not had weed poison sprayed on them, are not near car exhaust, pollution, etc. Remember, go with organic. Since leaves are somewhat bitter, add other leaves to salad as well. --- Salad's for fun or small supplemental; for therapeutic value tea is more potent. And don't overdo it.

CILANTRO ~ This herb is unique in its known effect for removing heavy metals from the body! Specifically mercury, lead and aluminum. Though I have not finished my research so there could be more. Since some, enough, who have Mental Illness have shown a connection to heavy metals in their body and brain , so this is a wonderful herb to help detox and remove them. (When metals are found, they're inclined to interfere with response of synapses). It's best to first get a hair analysis or some type of lab test (even blood work if necessary) in order to find out factually, without speculation, if there are heavy metal's in the body or not. Contact a health care practitioner who has had experience in this field and can guide you through it. And because, parasites, candida, tend to increase once heavy metals are removed, usually it is best to do a parasite or candida cleanse FIRST. With that said, cilantro is great, natural, ORAL CHELATION. Good for juicing too. And for making pesto.

VALERIAN ~ is a sedative herb, can act as a minor tranquilizer for sleep problems, restlessness, stress, and is a muscle-relaxer. It stimulating to GABA, which in turn calms the brain.
Animal testing showed it to be consistent with other hypnotic agents such as the benzodiazepines (Hendriks et al., 1985). Human clinical studies confirm a mild sedative effect (Houghton, 1988).
An alternative to benzodiazepine for bedtime sedation (Gerhard et al., 1996).
It should not be used long-term as restlessness, sleeplessness, mydriasis, headaches and cardiac dysfunction can occasionally appear. Overdose can cause dystonic reactions and hepatotoxicity (MacGregor et al., 1989). Significant side effects are not common.
According to Commission E monographs (therapeutic guide to herbal medicines), there are no contraindications to Valerian. Reported adverse effects of valerian are rare.
Chemical composition of Valerian includes sesquiterpenes of the volatile oil (including valeric acid), iridoids (valepotriates), alkaloids, furanofuran lignans, and free amino acids such as g-aminobutyric acid (GABA), tyrosine, arginine, and glutamine. Although the sesquiterpene components are believed responsible for most of valerian's biologic effects, it is likely that all the active constituents act in a synergistic manner to produce a clinical response. Research into physiologic activity of individual components demonstrated direct sedative effects (valepotriates, valeric acid) and interaction with neurotransmitters such as GABA (valeric acid and unknown fractions).
Nutritionally, it contains choline, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus sodium, and B complex Vitamins.
Tastes like mud :-), or your dirty laundry ha, so best to take it in veggie caps, and best that the herb which is inside the veggie caps are an extract.
Because the activity and strength of valerian preparations vary significantly from one product to the next, it's recommended to pick standardized product of 0.5-1.0% valerenic acids and follow directions on the particular product. As a general guideline, approximately 250-500mg of a 5-6:1 extract can be taken before bed for sleep aid, or as needed as a mild tranquilizer. Always consult with your doctor.

GINKO BILOBA ~ Improves blood flow to CNS (central nervous system) & to the brain; as well as increasing circulation to the extremities (arms, legs, hands, feet).
Reduced blood flow to the brain leads to a variety of difficulties including depression, memory loss due to certain brain problems (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, Stroke, Etc), even disorientation.
Ginkgo Biloba extract has been shown as effective treatment, but it must be high quality and especially must be standardized extract. The leaves just won't do it.
Also, ginko helps protect cells of the brain and nervous system, as they are particularly susceptible to attack from free radicals, therefore ginko may help prevent CNS age-related diseases.
Laboratory and clinical studies have found much support for the majority of claims made about therapeutic use of Ginkgo biloba extract. The German Commission E approves Ginkgo for effective therapy in cases of memory deficits, impaired concentration, depression, dizziness, some cases of tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and some headaches. The primary groups of dementias targeted for treatment with Ginkgo are primary degenerative dementia, vascular dementia and mixed forms of both.
Side effects of Ginkgo biloba extract very rarely, some experience gastrointestinal upset, allergic skin reaction and headache. Clinical studies have shown approximately only 1% suffered mild stomach upset. Some with poor blood flow to the brain may get a mild headache for the first couple days of usage. Its inhibition of platelet activating factor could pose a concern to those individuals with blood clotting problems or those taking anticoagulant medications (so check with your doctor before taking ginkgo biloba). There are no known contraindications or interactions with other drugs. Ginkgo biloba is not known to be toxic at high dosages although remember its blood thinning properties.
General consensus is for the treatment of problems in the extremities, including vertigo, tinnitus and intermittent claudication, a dosage of 120-160 mg per day was recommended. And for treatment of dementia, mild depression, and improvement of cognitive abilities, higher dose of approximately 240 mg/day is recommended. For best results, the daily dosage is split into 2-3 divided doses. Check with your doctor!

HERBS & PARASITE REMEDIES
No time now to type up details regarding what each anti-parasite herb does. Here is a basic list: Black Wallnut Green Hulls (clears round worms, tape worms.) Both Turmeric and Fennel Seed can clean up E.coli and Shiegella. (Cinnamon can also get rid of E. coli. American strains are not as potent as the stronger Chinese or Ayurdevic Cinamon "bark." Garlic, though a blood thinner so should not be used with certain medications 'but' is very powerful in it's anti-parasitical action. Please NOTE: there is an entire program, such as right eating, etc., for a minimum of four weeks. To be honest it usually takes longer, and often needs to be repeated in order to get rid of the eggs. Matter of fact, it's not easy, nor impossible, to get rid of parasites, it just takes a bit of repetition of the program. Incidentally, eggs can be killed off by the use of Cloves. Now, Asofoetida (also called hing) is used Ayurvedically for cooking but also gets rid of parasites; not thru killing them off but through the process of elimination. Wormwood (Artemisia annua) has been reputed to kill the malaria bug, but this herb is not as safe as the others so best to get the help of a professional. (Also, not recommended if their are thyroid problems.) Now, Ginger kills roundworms. Bitters are also used by TAM and TCM, as they paralyze and kill parasites in the digestive tract, plus control their eggs, improve digestive secretions. ......Organic, organic, organic. I can't say that enough. Always buy organic. Also add acidophilus or some form of intestinal flora to this program. -- Will update when time permits. You can do a net search to find a good tincture or tea. There may be what's called "die-off" in the beginning (which I am more use to calling a "cleansing reaction.") It means the parasites are dieing, which may initially cause a person to feel a little sick or uncomfortable. Therefore, seek out a professional herbalist.
NOTE: Worm pets too, or person may get it back.

DRUG INTERACTIONS, BEST DOSE, CONTRAINDICATIONS, ETC - I can't answer all questions about these herbs. Please do your homework and find out for yourself.
ALSO, after reading all this, coupled with scientific research, it may be tempting to believe herbs alone can cure Mental Illness. While I have read studies for depression etc where herb made a significant difference, when it comes to other forms (Manic/Depression, Schizophrenia), I have yet to learn of herbs curing these. Though I will keep my ears open. :-) Until than, use this to your benefit and don't let it discourage you. Don't be "all or none," as the idea is to use a variety of things, all of which are supportive and get a one to the goal, their personal goal.

Geocities no longer allows my sites to be published free. Matter of fact they were (suddenly) shut down for awhile, unbeknownst to me! Initially I paid the cost to keep them going (requiring the more expensive one since I only know how to use FrontPage). Only then did they reopen my webs. Now, I don't make a lot of money and - well - not sure how long I can keep doing this. Humbly I ask you to please give a donation - any size would help. IMHO it will actually make the difference between night and day! Then this site can keep on going and going, with a little help.
Kindly help out - with any amount at all, really.
Do you enjoy any of my E-Groups? Many of my web sites are used to support and help them out. (Admittedly, I am concerned one day yahoo will shut them down except to those who pay... because they considered that in the past.) Anyhow, some of my sites interact with my e-groups, such as:
Inspiration Newsletter, Distant Healing, Mental Health & Rebalancing, Hypothyroidism (TAM, TCM), Shastra / Prabhupada e-group, ETC. (The following contains both e-groups and site links) http://www.geocities.com/priitaa/krishna_conscious_web_sites.htm
Maybe you use them .... or not. Doesn't matter so much, since all help is good karma or more, assists others who are in need etc, plus keeps everything running smoothly with even a little donation. Anything at all is greatly appreciated! :-)

EXERCISE
Briefly, it has been shown that exercise elevates mood and aids the healing process of Mental Illness. Certain forms have been reputed to help realign the spine (thus rebalancing &/or creating a clearer pathway for some brain chemicals). Look into a gentle-style of Hatha Yoga. ...More about (physical) exercise in the future. :-)
BREATH WORK
Oxygen depletion has been sited as one problem in Mental Illness. This is something one can treat for free! :-)
Certain types of PranaYama help balance the right and left hemisphere's of the brain. It's called "Nadi Shodanam." Just don't do it to the point of becoming light-headed.
Or to start something simple that works: Three times a day slow down, stop, and take 10 s-l-o-w, deep breaths. Remember, three times.
When experiencing an attack, this is a good time to practice Deep breathing. It has the ability to be calming and bring on peace.
JOURNALING
Not only does this help a person psychologically and emotionally, it has also been reputed to help gradually realign & reconnect the brain. Though I will add, if one is depressed or too inward, journaling about their upsets is often overwhelming and does not produce healing results! In which case suggestions can be given to journal about the good things in life, be it the beauty of nature, or something that does not trigger a negative thought. If this still doesn't work, forget the journaling!
Similar effects to journaling is (sensible) Art work.
And doing puzzles! Both crossword as well as jigsaw. :-) They're great, and easy to find as they are in Walmarts and most similar stores. A wonderful family activity too.
All of these help connections to reconnect.
Results may take a little while, thus please seek out your patience. No one got this sick overnight, that took time. We get back what we put into it, so allowance of happiness over what's being done is a good idea. :-)

Again, I don't have time to type up much on this topic at the moment, but wanted to touch on it. While it doesn't cure mental illness (as of this writing), Music Therapy has been found to significantly elevate mood - when you find the "right" music. :-) And of course, know the science; therefore seek out an expert in this field.
Update: Here's a good place to start, very good! http://www.centerformusictherapy.com/
PLEASE Note: IMHO, in order for this, and others like breath-work, exercise, journaling, etc. to be successful, persons with Mental Illness wishing to rebalance must:
1) Take an Orthomolecular product like "Equilib" or True Hope's "EmpowerPlus" (according to their instructions), &/or
2) Take (right does) veggie OMEGA 3, &/or DHA; maybe Natural Lithium (whichever applies.)
3) Continue taking allopathic medication - at least until your doctor tells you otherwise.
Do everything under a doctors supervision. As you heal, the dose of meds may need to be reduced! Something only a licensed Psychiatrist can figure out. And it's usually best to reduce them gradually, therefore you need to be monitored.
After following these three, that is when Diet, Herbs, Music Therapy, Hatha Yoga or Exercise, PranaYama, Etc., etc., can make a difference, giving one back the life they want. By doing so, they automatically put you in synch with a Holistic program, and it's quite a pleasant one at that!
As
all of this takes root, a person actually begins to notice by comparison that they are
improving (yes, it "does" happen). Ya just f-e-e-l better. That offers
something to compare to and one now can notice the
difference. Also consider finding a source to relearn Life Skills - or
Cognitive Therapy is good. Folks might feel they don't need this, which is
understandable; though remember - one's body (including brain) has been changed
by this disease. This disease is heartless and ROBS one of their previous coping & other
skills. Take them back!! It's
not about being crazy, it's about learning how to heal, how to move forward.
Don't judge yourself. Others go in for Cognitive (Etc.) Therapy who
haven't had Mentally Illness - all sorts of people attend. Allow yourself be happy you get to go!
You are on your way! :-)

BOOKS ~ Not free 'but' you can often find used copies online which are therefore much less expensive. Also, they are not required for healing to take place. Personally, I found them quite helpful & supportive.
I Am Not Sick, I Don't Need Help! By Xavier Amador and Anna-Lica, Ph.D. Johanson ~ While this book doesn't go into the more natural medical forms of treatment, what it does have to offer are alternative treatment viewpoints, including a story or two about Anosognosia, with the authors own scientific test as evidence. Book also helps family members (etc) find ways to help their loved one to be more cooperative in the healing process. Improves caretaker's communication with the mentally ill.
Orthomolecular Treatment for Schizophrenia By Abram Hoffer ~ From the Publisher: The Magic Of Orthomolecular Treatment - Orthomolecular treatment of schizophrenia is a comprehensive approach that includes megavitamin therapy, nutrition, and counseling of both patient and family members. This guide, written by a cofounder of orthomolecular psychiatry, outlines the strategies you will need to get an informed diagnosis, proper treatment, and appropriate, flexible follow-up for the schizophrenic patient.

(A group specific to Caretakers, finally!)
If you have a child, or family member (brother/sister, aunt/uncle, parent, spouse, or best friend (you help out), etc., who has been diagnosed with a serious form of Mental Illness (Psychosis, Bipolar, Schizophrenia) it can be devastating, leaving one at a loss over what to do, how to regain peace. I started an e-group for caretakers or helpers of the Mentally Ill. Though it's not for those afflicted with it - sorry. However, you aren't left out - see my e-group on Distant Healing directly below, with similar information. Now here, caretakers can interact & find various ways to help one another. Note: we are (easy-going) Krishna devotees - anyone's welcome to join who's respectful of our path. .... And now with that said... there IS hope. Unique cutting edge alternative info: herbs & amino's, minerals & oils, diet, Vegetarian healing Recipes, more.
Please, no curiosity seekers, only for those dealing with a Mentally Ill loved one on a regular basis. Read our front page to see if we are a good fit for you. OR share it with a friend/caretaker in need of such info, as there are many these days. Those who fit, kindly join with us and together we can foster new ideas, hold each others hand, share unique knowledge, get a handle over this disease rather than the other way around! Take back your power, and give your loved one theirs! Of course no guarantees, but lots of (genuine) hope toward positive change! And you won't be alone. Complain, share, listen, read, post poetry, sit back with a cup of herbal tea and relax with us while learning ~ and watch improvement gently take place.

DISTANT HEALING
Something I find disappointing is, while a lot of the above may actually work, and IMHO often does work, too much of it requires significant amounts of money. (Though there are some which are free or inexpensive by nature. With this said.....)
I can't fix that, but what I can do is offer a Reiki / Pranic Healing Course FREE. As well as scientific Prayer technique.
Whether you are a devotee with this natural propensity or not a devotee but favorable, I created a (mellow) Krishna-ized egroup because there is very little available for us in this modern age. All are welcome who are respectful. Now, most charge a high fee for a Reiki Course, whereas here I offer it at no cost.
We are for some, not all. Check it out & see if we're a good fit for you. Hope you are. :)
More details on front page OR click to join! :). http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Krishnas_Distance_Healers
UPDATE: Some of the same documents and links to our Caretakers group are also available at this Distant Healing group! :-)

PHISHING - If someone is trying to fish for your personal identifying information and sends you phishing email, website, email addy, or service, you can report such incidents to the related company or ISP it came from. However, do NOT reply to the individaul/email you received. For example if its a yahoo abuse, "forward" a copy of it to: mail-spoof@cc.yahoo-inc.com But NEVER respond to the email sender it came from! Because that only goes back to the spammer in the first place and not an authority, thus you will end up on their endless phishing e-list!
